When speaking into mic

Sometimes, when speaking into the mic, I am off the charts, other times way too low. What should I target for in audition in terms of db prior to beginning work on editing/processing?

I usually aim for -6db to -3db making sure not to spike the red.

Something that helps me tremendously is having an analogue compressor in my chain. This helps to even out any spikes in audio and keep volumes consistent.

Some mixing desks will come with on board limiters on the mic channels which can also help.

Thanks for that. Right now I use only the DBX286 - supposed I should p[lay with those settings some more to get into that rangeā€¦ seems I am usually more hot than anything. Thanks, Mike.
