EQ & Normalization Order

I have learnt the correct order is to: equalise, normalise, compress and normalise. Why is that recognised as being the right order and does it really make a big difference?

Well think about it. If you compress first, there’s less dynamic range left to EQ with.

This is more for broadcast audio when you want consistency to stop listeners having to adjust the volume every few minutes. But your ears learn to adapt in normal everyday environments plus you have the added benefit of facial gestures and lip reading to help you and your brain tries to automatically fill in any gaps.
